International Troops Enter Haiti Story aired: Monday, March 01, 2004
International forces arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti today, one day after President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's hasty resignation and departure from the tiny Caribbean nation.
French and American troops are part of a multinational force approved by the U.N. Security Council to restore order in Haiti. The country erupted in violence four weeks ago as rebel forces called for Aristide to step down.
Responding to a last-minute plea from Aristide, the White House arranged for his flight to Central Africa.
Hours after Aristide's departure, Supreme Court Chief Justice Boniface Alexandre declared that he would take control of the government, as called for in Haiti's constitution.
