"Xuanzang," book detail
Monk's Travels
Story aired: Monday, March 01, 2004

Across a world that no longer exists, some 1,400 years ago, a Buddhist monk named Xuanzang walked 10,000 miles From China to India and back again.

It took him 16 years across soaring, snow-capped mountain ranges and across desert. He met emperors, kings, robbers, pirates, and saints, all to journey to northern India, where Buddhism originated. His quest was to bring back to China the religions teachings and scriptures of India.

The story of one of history's greatest travelers is in a book, "Xuanzang: A Buddhist Pilgrim on the Silk Road" by Sally Hovey Wriggins.
