Iraq, Pakistan Bombings Kill Nearly 200
Story aired: Tuesday, March 02, 2004

The day Shiite Muslims consider the holiest day of the year, Ashoura, has instead turned into a bloody day for Shiite worshipers in both Iraq and Pakistan.

Nearly two hundred Iraqis and Pakistanis have died today as blasts ripped through mosques in Baghdad and Karbala in Iraq. Another blast occurred during a religious procession in Quetta, Pakistan.

The holy day of Ashoura commemorates the day when the grandson of the prophet Mohammed was killed, resulting in what has become a major split between Sunni and Shiite Muslims.
