Scene from the play "Sin: A Cardinal Deposed"
Sin
Story aired: Tuesday, March 16, 2004

Victims of clergy sex abuse have been traveling to a theater in Chicago to hear the words of a man they accuse of turning a blind eye to the sins of priests. The dialogue in "Sin: a cardinal Deposed" is taken straight from testimony made by Cardinal Bernard Law during the sex scandal in the Boston Catholic Church.

Bernard Law eventually stepped down as archbishop of the Diocese of Boston without ever admitting any guilt in the abuse scandal.

Actor Jim Sherman portrays Law in the Bailiwick Repertory Company production of "Sin," and Mark Steel plays Boston attorney Roderick MacLeish. We spoke with them both from WBEZ in Chicago. We also called playwright Michael Murphy in California, and started our conversation by asking Jim Sherman how his portrayal of the cardinal was received the first night on stage.
