Book cover detail, "Escaping the Delta"
Escaping the Delta
Story aired: Thursday, March 25, 2004

Before Muddy Waters and way before Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones, there was Robert Johnson.

The bluesman's legend blossomed in Great Britain during the 1960s, with devilish tales of booze and hard times.

Music journalist Elijah Wald writes about the man, the myth, and his music in the new book, "Escaping the Delta: Robert Johnson and the Invention of the Blues."
