Atomic Bomb from Scratch
Story aired: Monday, May 24, 2004

A "nuclear calamity" is a distinct possibility if more is not done to secure highly vulnerable nuclear stockpiles around the world.

That's according to a new report that says the amount of nuclear material secured in the two years since September 11th is actually less than in the two years prior.

What's more, American scientists have been able to build a complete atomic bomb, lacking only the fuel, from widely available parts purchased legally on the open market.

Guests:

Matthew Bunn, Harvard University Kennedy School of Government and one of the authors of the new report.
