Nicholas Kristof Marks Tiananmen Anniversary
Story aired: Friday, June 04, 2004

Fifteen years ago, a massive square in the heart of Beijing, China earned a place in history. Shocking reports crackled across newswires around the world as students and ordinary citizens stared down the army and the Communist Party in Tiananmen Square.

The images were indelible: a citizen, armed only with his battered briefcase staring down a column of tanks. A makeshift lady liberty, flimsy and idealized, warning Communist Party bosses that there were alternatives to their rule.

Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times watched those events unfold, and he joins Here and Now.
