The Legacy of President Reagan Story aired: Monday, June 07, 2004
Mourners are gathered outside the funeral home in Santa Monica, California where late President Ronald Reagan's body began its final journey.
The body will also lie in repose today at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley to give visitors their chance to pay their respects. This as Washington, DC prepares for its first state funeral in 30 years this Friday at Washington's National Cathedral. After the funeral, President Reagan's body will then be returned to California for burial.
It's hard to open the newspaper, turn on the radio or the TV without hearing fond reminiscences of the late president, the eternal optimist with a penchant for jelly beans.
And while there's little doubt that Reagan captivated the electorate, converting many a Democrat to his Republican Party along the way, his legacy is more complex.
For insight on President Reagan's life and legacy, Here and Now turns to Michael Deaver, former Reagan administration deputy chief of staff and longtime friend and Professor Roger Porter, a former advisor to President Reagan and professor at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
