Iraq's Allawi Faces Rumors of Brutality
Story aired: Monday, July 19, 2004

Militants in Baghdad today killed a top official of the Iraqi Defense Ministry in a drive-by shooting. Hours earlier, a massive bomb took the lives of at least nine policemen.

Today's violence follows the weekend decision by interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi to authorize a U.S. air strike on alleged militant positions in Fallujah .Locals said 14 people were killed. Allawi has taken a tough line against the insurgency, very tough, according to some reports.

Guests:

Paul McGeough, Baghdad reporter for Australia's Sydney Morning Herald.
