Palestinian Power Vacuum
Story aired: Monday, July 19, 2004

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is facing yet another challenge to his authority as the Gaza Strip seems to be unraveling into chaos.

On Friday, gunmen from competing factions kidnapped two Palestinian security chiefs and several foreign aid workers. They were later released unharmed, but this direct challenge to Arafat's authority set off a chain reaction. His prime minister has resigned, as have two security chiefs. And there were mass protests this weekend calling for an end to corruption within the Palestinian leadership.

Guests:

Greg Myre, Jerusalem bureau chief for the New York Times.
