Iraqi Governing Council member Ahmad Chalabi shows a damaged family photograph to the media during a news conference at his home after U.S. soldiers and Iraqi police raided the home in Baghdad.
Once a Favorite of the U.S., Adviser Now Wanted by Iraqi Government
Story aired: Monday, August 09, 2004

The man who may have done more than any other to bring American forces to bear in Iraq is now wanted on charges of counterfeiting. His nephew, a point person in the upcoming trial of Saddam Hussein, is facing charges related to murder.

Ahmad Chalabi, head of the Iraqi National Congress, was once the darling of the Bush administration. He spoke to the BBC from his exile in Iran, saying, "The charges are not issued by the Iraqi government; they are filed by a novice judge who is not qualified. In any event, the charges are ridiculous. They are false and I'm going back to Baghdad to confront those lies."
