Bush Nominates CIA Chief Story aired: Tuesday, August 10, 2004
This morning at the White House, President Bush nominated Florida Congressman Porter Goss to head the CIA. Former CIA Director Stansfield Turner called it "the worst nomination in history," but the president praised Goss as a reformer who once was a CIA operative and who now chairs the House Intelligence Committee.
Bush said of Goss, "He knows the CIA inside out. He's the right man to lead this important agency at this critical moment in our nation's history."
Goss said he accepts the challenge of leading the embattled agency toward reform spelled out by the 9/11 Commission. At the same time, he praised CIA agents, saying "What many Americans don't realize is that we've got an awful lot of people around the globe doing hard work in dangerous situations. The essence of our intelligence capability is people."
