Story aired: Friday, August 13, 2004

The 2004 Olympic Games officially open today. Today we take a look at the worldwide athletes by speaking with Los Angeles Times sports reporter Helene Elliott.

A Trojan horse and figures from mythology are part of today's opening ceremony, a salute to the ancient home of the Olympic Games. We talk about the original contests as they were played in ancient Greece.

Guests:

Helene Elliot, sports reporter for the Los Angeles Times

Stephen Miller, professor of archeology at the University of California in Berkeley, author of the new book "Ancient Greek Athletics."
