John Kerry (AP)
Vietnam and the Presidential Election
Story aired: Thursday, August 26, 2004

Thirty years ago, two swift boat captains, John Kerry and John O'Neill, debated the Vietnam War on the Dick Cavett show.

Today, O'Neill is the leader of the Swift Boat Captains for Truth, a group that claims Kerry is misrepresenting his service for political gain. Others are questioning whether George Bush fulfilled his duties stateside, as a member of the National Guard.

All of which begs the question: why is Vietnam still a burning political issue more than 30 years after the conflict ended?

Guests:

Tim O'Brien and Stanley Karnow, authors.
