Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (AP)
Knesset Rebukes Sharon over Gaza
Story aired: Tuesday, October 12, 2004

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered an extraordinary rebuke in the Knesset, when members of his own party joined the opposition to vote down his speech at the opening of the current session. The vote is only a symbolic one, and this is the first time in the history of Israel that one was voted down.

But it's a warning shot if ever there was one that his plans to remove settlers from the Gaza Strip won't be easy to fulfill.

Michael Matza is a correspondent for the Philadelphia Inquirer and he joins us from Jerusalem.
