Saudi Women Banned from Vote
Story aired: Wednesday, October 13, 2004

Saudi Arabia has announced women will not be allowed to vote or run for office in the country's first nationwide elections.

This news has dashed the hopes of many women in the country, who were hoping the municipal elections in February would give them a more visible role in Saudi society.

We spoke to Nadia Bakhurji last month -- she was the first woman to announce her candidacy for office. She joins us again today from her home in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh.
