Veronica Jochum Plays Osvaldo Golijov
Story aired: Wednesday, October 13, 2004

Composer Osvaldo Golijov, whose "St. Mark Passion" electrified the classical world four years ago, has completed his first composition for solo piano, its called "Levante: Fantasy on a Chorus from the St. Mark Passion."

Golijov rehearsed the piece at the Cambridge, Massachusetts home of pianist veronica Jochum.

The piano piece is adapted from "Saint Mark Passion," which is an eclectic blend of Latin American folk and dance music, Middle Eastern motifs, with lyrics from the Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead.

Golijov's piano adaptation will debut this weekend at Boston's New England Conservatory where it will be played by pianist Veronica Jochum, daughter of famed conductor Eugen Jochum. How does a composer hand off a new piece? We eavesdropped to find out.
