Vladimir Putin (AP)
Putin's Russia
Story aired: Thursday, November 25, 2004

Russian president Vladimir Putin is a central player in the drama now underway in Ukraine, which was once a part of the soviet union.

Putin, meeting European leaders in the Netherlands, today called for a non-violent end to the crisis.

But his steadfast backing of Yanukovich puts him at odds with U.S. and European leaders and rekindles cold war tensions that once seemed a thing of the past.

So who is Vladimir Putin? Robin Young spoke recently with Andrew Jack, the Financial Times Moscow correspondent and the author of a new book, "Inside Putin's Russia".
