New York Times' Judith Miller (AP)
The Name of Valerie Plame, and the Word of the Journalist
Story aired: Tuesday, December 07, 2004

A White House investigation into who leaked the name of an undercover CIA agent to journalist Bob Novak has ended up raising thorny questions about the rights of reporters to refuse to name sources. Two journalists, Judith Miller of the New York Times and Matt Cooper of Time Magazine, could end up in prison for refusing to tell a grand jury what they know in the case, even though they never printed the agent's name. The case heads to an appeals court tomorrow.

Guests:

Amy Sullivan, editor at Washington Monthly Magazine, she writes about the investigation in this month's edition

Lucy Dalglish, executive director for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, which has filed a friend of the court brief backing reporters Cooper and Miller

Geoffrey Stone, professor of law at the University of Chicago
