Tsunami Toll Climbs to over 100,000 Story aired: Thursday, December 30, 2004
Yesterday, media reports put the death toll at 70,000. Today the latest estimate is 114,000. And the number is expected to grow dramatically. Emergency teams have yet to arrive in many of the areas thought to have suffered even worse damage than the areas we've seen on our television screens all this week.
Indonesia is apparently the worst-hit nation with an estimated 80,000 dead.
The vast majority of those killed will forever be nameless to the rest of the world. But among them, there are also a few 1000 Europeans whose names are on record at consulates, on airline passenger lists.
Right now, 5000 Europeans are listed as missing, most of them Swedes and Germans.
