First Contact
Story aired: Friday, February 18, 2005

When the tsunami struck the Indian Ocean in December, most of us learned things we never knew about the countries that share its waters.

One of the more startling things we learned was that there were tribal peoples living on the Andeman and Nicobar Islands who still had no real contact with the outside world.

Writer Michael Behar was curious even before then. he made a trip earlier last year to West Papua, Indonesia to make, first contact with supposedly undiscovered tribal peoples.

He describes his trip in the February issue of Outside magazine.
