Quabbin Secrets
Story aired: Monday, February 28, 2005

Getting potable water to population centers has been a challenge since the days of the Roman Empire.

One such challenge was overcome in the early part of the last century. Few Boston residents know that the water filling their downtown sinks comes from the Quabbin Reservoir, 65 miles west of Boston. Even fewer know the story of how four towns in an idyllic valley setting were destroyed to make way for the huge reservoir.

Sean Cole of WBUR's Inside Out documentary unit met with valley residents who were forced to move out. He attended the reunion of the residents of the former town of Dana, Massachusetts.

 SPECIAL FEATURE:

Reporter Sean Cole hears stories of the Quabbin Reservoir from residents of the towns swallowed by its waters.
