According to recent studies, 13 is the median age girls begin drinking and 40 percent of women in college binge drink.

These and other statistics appear in Koren Zailckas's new memoir, but the most damning revelations about drinking are contained in her own story.

Koren was a student form a loving family who began drinking at the age of 13. She quit at 23 following four alcohol soaked years at Syracuse University. Her new book is called "Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood."
