Mideast Changes and Challenges
Story aired: Monday, February 28, 2005

In Beirut, Lebanon, the parliament opened today with a moment of silence in honor of slain former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Outside, some 10,000 citizens defied a ban on demonstrations, gathering to demand that Syria remove it's troops from their country.

Also, today in Cairo, Egypt's parliament began to debate President Hosni Mubarek's surprise weekend announcement proposing open multiparty elections.

These and other developments in the Middle East in recent days suggest shifts in the region.

To talk about them is Tamara Cofman Wittes, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
