Will "Song" Be Heard Again? Story aired: Tuesday, March 08, 2005
With its combination of animation and live actors, the Disney film "Song of the South" became an instant classic upon its release in 1946. Its signature tune "Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah" won an Academy Award, and an honorary Oscar went to actor James Baskett for what the Academy said was his "heartwarming characterization of Uncle Remus, friend and storyteller to the children of the world."
So why does "Song of the South" remain Disney's most controversial film? Its last theatrical release was in 1986, Disney withdrew the film from worldwide video distribution in 2001, and the film has never been released on home video in the United States.
