Assembly Meets
Story aired: Wednesday, March 16, 2005

Iraq's first freely elected national assembly in half a century gathered in Baghdad today, to the sound of explosions nearby, a series of bombing appeared to be aimed at the gathering of politicians. None of the assembly members were injured in the attacks.

Today's meeting is an historic occasion in Iraq -- coincidentally it's also the anniversary of the chemical gas attacks launched by Saddam Hussein against Kurdish civilians in the city of Halabje in 1988.

By the end of the one hour session today, the country still had no president, prime minister, or cabinet.

Guests:

Borzou Daragahi, who reports from Iraq for the Boston Globe and CBC Radio.

Songol Chapook, who is a Kurdish member of the assembly.
