Computers that Grade
Story aired: Tuesday, March 22, 2005

Is the art of writing something that can be judged only by humans? The educational testing service says no. It's developed e-rater, where computers evaluate writing. The program's been used to evaluate over two million essays for state high schools as well as the GMAT, the standard test that students take when they apply for business school.

Guests:

Jill Burstein, principal development scientist and one of the inventors of e-rater.
