Author Cynthia Kadohata had the kind of success with her first novel "The Floating World" that author's dream of. The New York Times gave it a great review and she received a major writing grant. But then, her second novel was panned and she struggled.

After a suggestion from a friend, she turned to writing young adult fiction. Her newest book "Kira-Kira" recently won the Newbery Medal, given for the "most distinguished contribution" to children's literature.
