UMass Student at Center of File Swapping Storm
Story aired: Wednesday, April 13, 2005

The Recording Industry Association of America is launching its latest legal salvo today in what it sees as a battle against free file swapping. The association -- which represents the industry's largest labels -- is filing suit against some 400 college students from 140 states. The local schools involved are Boston University, Harvard, MIT, and UMass Amherst.

According to the recording industry, the students are taking advantage of a private research network called Internet-2, to download and distribute copyrighted songs and movies.

For a look at the technology and philosophy of Internet-2, we turn to Wayne Chang, who has developed a related online program called I2hub, that the RIAA says is part of the downloading problem. In his sophomore year at UMass Amherst, Change has taken leave to work full-time at I2hub.

Guests:

Wayne Chang, who has developed a related online program called I2hub. He speaks with Here and Now's Bob Oakes.
