The Papal Conclave
Story aired: Friday, April 15, 2005

Ahead of the largest and most international papal conclave in Rome on Monday, security experts are tearing open cushions in the apartments where cardinals are staying to make sure there are no listening devices that might leak information about the man who will be chosen to be the next pope.

But even though cardinals promise never to reveal details of the conclave and face excommunication if they do, there are reports about potential front runners: Italian media have suggested conservative German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger is gaining support. At least one Irish bookie watching the papal race says the odds in favor of Ratzinger three to one.

Guests:

Anthony Majanlahti, whose forthcoming book is called "The Families who Made Rome."
