USDA Food Pyramid
A New Food Pyramid
Story aired: Monday, April 25, 2005

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its long anticipated new food pyramid last week. The icon is quite colorful, with a series of vertical bands representing the different food groups. Most of the space goes to fruits and vegetables followed by grains. The smallest bands go to sugars, fats, and oils. And for the first time the USDA has added another element: exercise.

The USDA say the new, colorful pyramid is designed as a guide to healthy living for Americans. But critics say it's too vague and misses the mark on good nutrition.

Guests:

Roberto Salazar, administrator for the Food and Nutrition Service at the USDA.

Dr. Walter Willet, Chairman of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard school of Public Health.
