U.S. Air Force Global Positioning System satellite (AP)
Arming Space - Part 2
Story aired: Thursday, May 26, 2005

Andrew Bacevich talks about what he sees as the limits of U.S. military power, in the second part of our series on the race for military supremacy in space.

In an ultra-modern view of war and of American military supremacy, the government apparently has plans to put weapons into space, using satellites and spacecraft armed with killer laser and radio beams, and huge spikes called "rods from god."

Bacevich says he is not in favor of a weak America. But he says weaponizing space is "crossing a great, big, bright red line."

He says it's just one more example of an "infatuation" with military might that he thinks is dangerous.

Bacevich heads the Center for International Relations at Boston University and is author of the book, "The New American Militarism."
