What Motivates the Suicide Bomber?
Story aired: Wednesday, June 08, 2005

University of Chicago political science professor Robert Pape is challenging common assumptions about suicide bombers.

Pape has studied 15 major suicide bombing campaigns between 1980 and 2003. He concludes that it's the desire to drive out foreign occupiers, not religion, that drives terrorists to kill themselves and others.

He writes about his finding in his new book "Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism."
