Aid to Africa
Story aired: Monday, June 13, 2005

President Bush is meeting with the leaders of five African nations today. This comes after the G8 countries agreed this weekend to cancel $40 billion in debt to 18 of the poorest nations -- 14 of them in Africa.

This deal is setting the stage for the G8 summit in Scotland next month, where British Prime Minister Tony Blair will be pushing the rich countries to boost aid to Africa by $50-billion a year by 2010.

Joining us on the line to talk about aid to Africa is Jeffrey Sachs, a Columbia University economist and special adviser to United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.
