HIV in Teens
Story aired: Monday, June 27, 2005

A generation of children born with HIV and AIDS is beginning to come of age and their parents are now faced with an astounding dilemma: How do I tell my child that he or she is HIV positive?

When the children were born, it was thought their lives would be short ones and so many parents never disclosed the illness to the children, family or friends; however, medical advances have extended their life span and as these children begin to reach their pre-teen years, parents are realizing that they can no longer keep their carefully-guarded family secret to themselves.

Guests:

Jonathan Fee, contributor to Sunday Times Magazine.

Dr. Claude Mellins, co-director of the Special Needs Clinic at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
