Remembering Srebrenica Story aired: Monday, July 11, 2005
Today marks the ten year anniversary of the worst massacre in Europe since the end of World War II on July 11, 1995. Serbian forces in Bosnia overran a United Nations protected enclave and rounded up thousands of people. In the days following, nearly 8,000 Muslim men and boys were murdered by Serbian forces.
Muhamed Durakovic was 20 years old on the day that Serbian troops overran the United Nations protected zone in Srebrenica. He and his father decided to try and escape through the forest. After failing to make it to a safe zone, Muhamed, his father, and a small group of others made a bold decision: they turned around and returned to Srebrenicza - just days after the Serbian slaughter.
