Health Care and Race
Story aired: Tuesday, July 26, 2005

Today, one of the leading hospitals here in Boston is launching what it says is the first hospital-based center trying to eliminate racial disparities in health care. It's an issue that's been gaining attention in recent years, in both the medical and research worlds.

Recent reports have found that blacks and Latinos have higher rates of infant mortality, diabetes, asthma and HIV, than whites.

Now, Massachusetts General Hospital is moving to bridge that gap with its "Disparities Solution Center." Here and Now's Bob Oakes spoke with the director of the center, Doctor Joseph Betancourt, and asked just how he plans to go about tackling the problem of racial disparities in health care.
