Fatwa Forbids Terrorism
Story aired: Thursday, July 28, 2005

American Islamic scholars gathered in Washington this morning to issue a Fatwa, or religious ruling, forbidding Muslims from committing or assisting terrorist acts. Many Muslim leaders in the U.S. have spoken out against terrorist acts, but a Fatwa carries much weight with Muslims, and this one directly contradicts similar proclamations by extremists such as Osama bin Laden, which urge Muslims to kill Americans.

Guests:

Roxanne Euben, author of "Enemy in the Mirror: Islamic Fundamentalism and the Limits of Modern Rationalism," and a professor of political science at Wellesley college.
