Gas and the Economy
Story aired: Tuesday, August 16, 2005

With the price of gas soaring at the pump, there are reports today that the Bush Administration is going to continue to exempt vehicles like Hummers, Ford Excursions and other large SUVs from federal fuel efficiency standards.
Historically, these vehicles have not been required to meet mileage requirements. The Bush Administration had proposed including these vehicles in fuel economy regulations in December 2003, but it appears that under pressure from domestic automakers it has changed its mind and will not require these vehicles to confirm to fuel efficiency standards when the new rules are released later this month.
