Hold the Gas, Please
Story aired: Monday, September 26, 2005

In a move that's sure to set off alarms in other industries hoping for consumers to spend money, Exxon Mobile has taken out a full page ad asking consumers to conserve fuel.

Even though Hurricane Rita didn't do as damage as feared this weekend, she did barrel through the heartland of the U.S. energy industry, already pummeled by Katrina, and now energy and car companies have shifted into a high gear campaign with full page ads, and a letter to President Bush to get the government and consumers to look at ways to lower fuel use.

Michael Mandel, a reporter with Business Week Magazine, adds his two cents on the gas debate. He comments on the president's remarks as well the long term impacts of massive government spending.

Peter Beutel, president of an energy risk management firm, discusses the response of other businesses and the apparent change in tack by the normally energy-consuming industries. He also looks at the upcoming energy situation and future lobby efforts to make conservation a central issue.

Guests:

Peter Beutel, president of Cameron Hanover

Michael Mandel, reporter for Business Week Magazine
