Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei (AP)
Nuclear Watchdog Wins Nobel Peace Prize
Story aired: Friday, October 07, 2005

The Nobel Prize committee called Mr. Elbaradei "an unafraid advocate" for nuclear non-proflieration "at a time when the threat of nuclear arms is again increasing."

Mr. ElBaradei has held the position of director general of the IAEA for eight years. He initially enjoyed the support of the U.S., but after refusing to confirm White House allegations about Saddam Hussein's nuclear weapons program he became the target of a failed white house effort to oust him.

Mr. ElBaradei referred to the the day the U.S. invaded Iraq as "the saddest day of his life" because he was so sure the administration's assertions about nuclear weapons would be proven wrong.

Guests:

Joseph Cirincione, director of Non-Proliferation at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
