Church at a Crossroads
Story aired: Friday, October 07, 2005

The Roman Catholic Church is at a crossroads. Faced with priest shortages and still reeling from the priest sex abuse scandals, there are growing concerns that the Catholic Church could eventually splinter in the United States.

And while bishops in Rome are speaking out on issues that were once considered off-limits by the Vatican officials, the American Church seem to be cracking down on outspoken priests.

Guests:

Father Walter Cuenin, whose supporters say was ousted from Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Newton, MA because he spoke out against some Church policies.

Tom Mahoney, priest at St. Patrick's Parish in Watertown, MA and chair of the Boston Priest's Forum.

Washington Post correspondent Dan Williams.
