President Asks Nation to Conserve
Story aired: Friday, October 07, 2005

President Bush has called for Americans to conserve energy by driving less, turning down the heater, or as his EPA adminstrator said this week on NPR, changing at least one incandescent lightbulb to an energy-saving florescent one.

The call to conservation from a president whose administration once derided it, is a stunning development, and brings to mind President Jimmy Carter, who once gave a televised speech urging Americans to turn down the thermostat.

Bruce Schulman, professor of history at Boston University and expert on the 1970s analyzes Bush's call for conservation in light of Carter's.
