The Phantom of the Opera (1925)
Orchestra Brings Phantom to Life
Story aired: Monday, October 31, 2005

One of the most enduring spine tingling thrillers is the story of the "Phantom of the Opera," based on the 1911 Gaston Leroux novel. "Phantom" tells the tale of a lonely, disfigured spirit deep in the recesses of the Paris Opera House, hidden from cruel and prying eyes.

Before Andrew Lloyd Webber, "Phantom of the Opera" was a classic 1925 silent film starring Lon Cheney. That version has received new life in a beautifully restored print scored by the Alloy Orchestra of Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Recently Bill Marx talked with Alloy Orchestra director Ken Winokur about "Phantom," and Alloy's work with other silent films.
