Early Education and the Achivement Gap
Story aired: Thursday, December 08, 2005

One of the strongest movements in education today is a call for universal pre-school education for children as young as three. Currently, 41 states provide some support for pre-school.

This week, the National Institute for Early Education Research at Rutgers University released a study evaluating pre-k programs in five states. The study showed that children in public school programs went on to do significantly better in language, literacy and math than students who attended the Head Start Program.

Guests:

Kyle Dodson, Principal of Lee Academy Pilot School in Dorchester, MA

Kathleen McCartney, acting dean at the Harvard Graduate School of Education

Dick Clifford, senior scientist at the FPG Development Institute at the University of North Carolina
