MySpace Invaders
Story aired: Thursday, January 12, 2006

Parents across the country are sounding an alarm over the wildly popular MySpace networking website that they worry could put their children at risk of being preyed upon by sexual predators.

Kids use the site to meet up with friends, but they also post personal information like class schedules, phone numbers and even provocative photos.

While there have been online meeting places before, none has been as popular -- MySpace boasts 42 million members. And media mogul Ruport Murdoch's News Corporation has acquired MySpace and plans to make it even more popular by adding features like video downloads and internet phone calls. Murdoch hopes the site will rival sites like Yahoo! and MSN.

Guests:

Jessi Hempel of Businessweek, who wrote a cover story about MySpace.

Stacy Debroff and her daughter Kyle both of Newton, Massachusetts. Kyle's school is one of many that has begun advising students about the dangers they face when their put their personal information online. Stacy Debroff is the founder of the parenting group, Mom Central.
