State Forces Wal-Mart to Spend More on Healthcare Story aired: Friday, January 13, 2006
Maryland the first state to pass a law forcing private enterprise to offer enhanced healthcare benefits. And beginning 30 days from now, Wal-Mart will be required to spend more on healthcare for its employees in that state.
The legislation passed last night over Maryland Governor Ehrlichs veto applies to all companies employing over 10,000 workers. It was spearheaded by a strong labor lobby which maintains that Wal-Mart's full time employees couldn't afford the company's healthcare plans and were turning up on the state's medicaid rosters in unprecedented numbers.
