Freelance writer Jill Carroll (AP)
A Most Dangerous Profession
Story aired: Friday, January 20, 2006

Jill Carroll's captors said they would kill her Friday, unless U.S. authorities agreed to release all female Iraqi detainees. Iraqi authorities have said that they plan to release six of the eight female detainees, but deny it is in response to the kidnappers' demands.

For some perspectives on Carroll and the dangers of reporting in Iraq and hostage taking, Robin Young speaks with the following:

Jackie Spinner, former Baghdad bureau chief for The Washington Post and a friend of Jill Carroll.

Micah Garen, filmmaker, who was kidnapped along with his translator in Augest 2004. They were held for ten days by a Shiite group loyal to the cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Anas Altikriti, who recently went to Iraq to negotiate for the release of four kidnapped Christian peace activists. Those hostages are still missing. Altikriti has also advised a delegation from the Council on American-Islamic Relations that has gone to Iraq to try and secure Carroll's release.
