Wages of Fear
Story aired: Wednesday, January 25, 2006

A new nationwide study takes a detailed look at the lives of day laborers across the United States. These workers are mostly Hispanic, often undocumented and are at the center of a heated immigration debate.

Social Scientists at New York's New School University, the University of Illinois at Chicago and UCLA looked at the demographics of day laborers and produced the study which is called "On The Corner: Day Labor in the United States."

The study reports that these workers routinely endure wage violations, injuries and violent employers.

Guests:

Nik Theodore, director of the Center for Urban Economic Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago
