Story aired: Friday, January 27, 2006

Speeches on the floor of the U.S. Senate Friday are focused on the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. But in day three of formal debate, the talk behind the scenes is filibuster and whether Democrats will try, against the odds, to talk the nomination to death when it comes up for a vote next week.

Massachusetts Senator John Kerry called for a filibuster Thursday from Davos, Switzerland where he is attending the World Economic Forum. That caused White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan to chuckle when asked about it at a briefing Friday morning.

But the White House might not be chuckling over some poll numbers out Friday. A CBS/New York Times poll shows that just days before the State of the Union Address, Americans are dissatisfied with the way the president is handling the economy and the war in Iraq. And they're divided over spying on Americans without court warrants.

Guests:

John Harwood, National Political Editor for the Wall Street Journal
